We awoke one morning to find half a dozen men whitewashing the defunct movie theatre down the block. The same was going on at the library. Near the market, people waited on line for free buckets of paint. Boys on bicycles deftly balanced ladders on their shoulders. The electric company brought in cherry pickers to clip stray wires and repair derelict street lamps. And in the wee hours of the morning, slow moving trucks with hissing sprayers coated the town with insecticide, leaving the streets littered with thousands of dead bugs. Word was out that the President of Mexico, Vincente Fox, was to make a visit at the end of the month. The town was mobilized. Click below to see more photos: |
