When the Spanish came, they baptized the indigenos -- sometimes thousands at a time -- but they never extinguished the ancient religion, they merely drove it underground. And at no time of the year does this ‘underground’ come more to life than on November 1 -- Dia de los Muertos.

This is an altar created for someone who died during the past year. Friends and relatives put out their favorite food, cigarettes, tequila, beer, sweets and flowers.
