Chiapas is the southernmost state of Mexico; it borders Guatemala. In May, JoJo and I drove to San Cristóbal de las Casas. This town came into the limelight in the 90s when it was taken over by the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN). Although armed, the EZLN is mostly interested in political efforts to build health clinics and schools. The hotel where we stayed is called Na Bolom. It's part of a non-profit NGO that was founded in 1951 by the Danish Archaeologist Frans Blom and the Swiss conservationist and photographer Gertrude Duby. The organization helps the Lacandona communities, a local indigenous people that were in danger of extinction in the latter half of the 20th century. . |
