La Gran Cabalgata is the kickoff to the 10-day celebration. TV cameras catch the words of the mayor, the poems of the décimista, the music of Son Jarocho and the procession of hundreds of horses through town. Men on horseback wear the traditional four-cornered Veracruzana hat, red bandanas around their necks, immaculate guayabera shirts, pressed white pants and polished black boots. The women ride sidesaddle in their classic deshilados -- a layered and flounced white lace skirt with a black apron and with roses tucked into their colorful hair ribbons. |
