Several times a week roads in and around Oaxaca city are blocked. One never knows exactly when or where these bloqeos will occur. They're one of the great annoyances of Oaxacan life. If you are outside the city you can't get in. If you're inside the city you can't get out. They go on for hours.

Some group or village has a grievance that has not been addressed to their satisfaction. You can be sure it involves money but beyond that nothing is clear.

One afternoon we hit a bloqueo while driving back home. Joanna was determined to find out the reason for it. As it turned out many participants weren't quite sure themselves. But she did find out it was a squabble between 2 adjacent villages regarding government monies.
