As if Catrina and friends weren't enough, here in Guanajuato there is the Museo de las Momias - the mummy museum - a tourist magnet. These are not mummies in the Egyptian sense. There was no ritual embalming. These are just the desiccated remains of normal human beings who were disinterred when their families could no longer afford to keep the remains in their original cemetery plots. Many of these 'mummies' died in a cholera outbreak in the 1830s - little suspecting they'd become one of Mexico's leading tourist attractions. Life can take strange turns - even when you're dead. |
