CLICKSLIDESHOW AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PHOTO Son Jarocho could be translated "Music of Veracruz" - and it's a very particular sound. In the slideshow you'll see harps, jaranas (8-string guitars), bass fiddles and yes, the jaw bone of an ass. Son Jarocho typically has no percussion instruments, but that's where the Huapango dancers come in. They stomp the beat with their boots on a tarima - a wooden platform set up for reverberation. I took these photos during a music festival in Tlacotalpan in 2006 - a festival that recurs every year. Can you pick out the tune? "La Bamba" is a traditional Son Jarocho song that Ritchie Valens rocked and rolled onto the charts in 1958. |
