There's a large Mennonite community around Hopelchen, a town just east of Campeche. They're easy to spot because they don't look anything like Mexicans. They're taller and have blue eyes. They wear a kind of uniform. For men it's black overalls, a plaid shirt and a cowboy hat. The women wear full length skirts, a buttoned-up-to-the-neck blouse topped with a ribboned bonnet. I've seen them riding horse & buggies as well as Toyotas. They're farmers, and driving past their farms you might imagine you were in Ohio. They don't mix much with the locals. They come in to the big city once in while to go supermarket shopping. I've yet to see one of them smile. |
