Fort San Miguel was built by the Spanish in the late 1600s to help protect Campeche from marauding bands of British and French pirates - and there were lots of them. The names Henry Morgan and Francis Drake, who were later knighted by the British Crown, stand out among them.

Nowadays "The Francis Drake" is one of the better hotels in town.
