Boun Ok Phansa, like many Lao holidays, is based on the lunar cycle. It's the 15th day of the waxing moon in October, which this year fell on the 23rd.

All along the river road by our house, families were making boats from banana trunks and branches. These boats aren't sent downstream, they are festooned with candles which burn all night long in front of houses and shops.
