| When the rainy season ends and the Mekong recedes, what it leaves behind in downtown Vientiane is a huge flat field of cracked mud. This becomes a playground of sorts. People venture out, put a few sticks in the ground to mark the goal post and play football - or stake up a net and play badminton, a very popular sport here. |  |
