Chao Anou was the last of the Kings of Vientiane. He reigned in the early 19th century. His demise came when he tried to reclaim what had been Lao land from the Kingdom of Siam.

He now stands in a new riverside park that bears his name. He looks south across the Mekong to Thailand, his nemesis. I'm told his gesture has many shades of meaning.
