THE BIG CHICKEN I'm learning Lao. This is my first reader. Lao has 27 consonants and almost as many vowels. The consonants rule the roost -- with vowels dancing around them, sometimes appearing above or below, fore or aft. There are also 5 tone markers. They're important. One syllable can have a completely different meaning from what you intend if the tone varies. I still have trouble discerning tone differences, much less reproducing them. Languages never cease to amaze me. The Big Chicken is one of many books published by Big Brother Mouse - an organization dedicated to helping Lao children learn their language.
