To educate a child is not to fill a vase, it is to kindle a flame. Most schools in the world teach by what Paolo Friere, a 20th century Brazilian-born educator, termed the "banking" system of education. Students are receptacles - a teacher deposits information into their heads and then gives them a test, a withdrawal, to see what they remember. There's neither room nor desire to teach students how to think, much less think critically. I'm happy to say that Vientiane College, where I'm now teaching, doesn't fall into this category. |
