There are hundreds of these "jars" scattered for miles across the plain near Phonsavanh in Xieng Khuang Province, northeastern Laos. They're thousands of years old. They vary in height from 1 to 2.5 meters. Their original purpose remains a mystery, although it's believed they had something to do with funeral rites. Many sites are still too dangerous to visit. Part of the old Ho Chi Minh Trail is nearby and UXO, dropped by "Air America", is still a problem. The fields are pockmarked with craters in every direction and large signs warn you not to stray off the beaten track. |
