Sri Lanka contains a muddle of religions but Buddhism is by far the most popular. It is said that Buddha himself visited Sri Lanka on 3 occasions. On the third visit he brought along 500 bhikkhus (ordained monks). At Nellikulama Temple near Anuradhapura there are 500 life sized statues of Buddhist monks to commemorate this visit. |
