Isola di San Michele is the burial ground for Venetians. It's a small island out in the lagoon and has its own vaporetto stop - Cimitero. People are still buried here but they don't stay long. After 10 years most are moved to make way for new arrivals. But there are exceptions for the rich and famous. Among them we have Ezra Pound. And hard by the grave of Igor Stravinsky is one of the more endearing monuments on the island - that of his collaborator Serge Diaghilew - the founder of Ballets Russes. |
