There's a beaten path in Venice. It runs from the train station to Piazza San Marco with a stop at the Rialto. It's crowded with tourists day and night. But take a few steps off this track and you'll easily get lost and be free to discover small treasures like this bridge. Ponte de le Tette, which means - let's not mince words here - Bridge of the Tits, has an interesting history. According to official counts there were 11,634 courtesans in Venice at the beginning of the 16th century. There were also a lot of transvestites. The Venetians being always very businesslike in their affairs passed a law enabling women to ply their trade topless on and around this bridge so as to preclude any incertitude among their clientele. |
