The visitor seeking enlightenment would arrive at the monument and then travel through these corridors in a clockwise direction beginning at the ground level. They'd then proceed to the next higher level and do the same. These passageways, which all told are over 1 km in length, are lined with stone carvings depicting, at the lower level, the world of desire, and higher up, the life of the Buddha, and finally, the heroic deeds of other enlightened beings.
