In January we flew to Yogyakarta, sometimes just called Yogya, in central Java. This was our starting point for exploring both Buddhist and Hindu temples nearby. But it's also home to the Kratan, or Sultan's Palace, a walled city at the center of Yogya. This was the center of local resistance when in 1948 the Dutch made a last ditch attempt to hold on to their former colony.
