These are baby graves and they are quite old. In Toraja, for a child who dies before their first set of teeth have emerged, there is a distinct way to send them off to the netherworld: a hole is dug into the tree and the baby is placed in it, head facing up. I know these pages seem lugubrious but the fact is, funereal rites are very important to the Torajans and are a big part of their culture - and a growing part of the tourist scene as well. Guides will come up to you and say: "You're in luck, there's a funeral today!" |
