This month we flew north from Bali to the island of Sulawesi, landing in Makassar. From there we took a 10 hour bus ride north to the town of Rantepao in the heart of the Tara Toraja region.

Torajans are Christians on the surface. On Sunday you'll see families wearing their finery on the way to the many churches around town. But underlying this very thin veneer of modern religion is a deeply rooted and cherished animism.
