Lunch is served... ... and at the "Hotel RRR Restaurant" this means laying the table with banana leaves, slapping a large mound of rice on top - along with dollops of all different kinds of masalas. The sauces are brought in small stainless steel bowls and, for foreigners only, they provide spoons. The locals use the fingers of their right hand to scoop up rice and smear it around with one or more of the masalas before stuffing it into their mouths. The food may not look like much but it's delicious. Amazingly enough we've been here nearly 2 months and haven't had any of the intestinal maladies most people complain of in visits to India. Perhaps after 2 years traveling in the tropics we've become inured to the bugs that cause them. (I'm knocking on wood as I write this.) Restaurants in India are divided up into "Veg" (only vegetabes, no meat) or "non-Veg" (vegetables and meat). This one is non-Veg. In fact, the special of the day was "mutton" - which in India usually means goat meat. But if you order non-veg meals and skip the Kingfisher beer, eating out is amazingly inexpensive. |
