You can see these pyramid-shaped gopuras all over India. They serve as the entrance to Hindu Temples. Most are elegantly carved and can be seem for miles in the distance. This one, which dates to 1442, is part of the Virupaksha Temple in the town of Hampi - where once stood the glorious Vijayanagar Kingdom. Inside, a courtyard is surrounded by arcades which were (and still are) used to house the many pilgrims who visit this site. It is dedicated to Shiva, who often gets a bum rap because his epithet is 'the destroyer'. |
