Vijayanagar ... is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it ... roses ... silk ... pearls, rubies, emeralds and diamonds and every other sort of thing there is on earth that you may wish to buy are sold publicly in the bazaars.

(Persian Ambassador, 1443)

We took an 8 hour train ride from Goa across the Western Ghats and onto the Deccan plain to the capital of this ancient Hindu Kingdom. Visitors to Vijayanagar between the years 1336 to 1556 were astounded by its wealth and beauty.

The ruins that remain are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This "tank", or ritual bathing pool, gives some slight indication of its former grandeur.
