About 100 km north of Mysore is Sravanabelgola, a site sacred to the Jains. On a mountaintop stands this 18 meter high, thousand year-old, white granite statue of a naked man - Gomateshvara.

He succeeded in reaching kevalajnana (somewhat akin to nirvana) by meditating in an upright position for so long that vines entwined his legs and anthills sprung up around his feet.
