The British may have ruled most of the sub-continent but it was the Portuguese who colonized Goa, now the smallest state in all India.

It has remained somewhat isolated from the rest of the country by the Western Ghats, the mountain chain that runs along the southwestern coast. Goa continues to have a Portuguese flavor.
