Kathakali, the highly stylized classical dance/drama that dates back to the 17th century, is native to Kerala. The stories are derived from Hindu classics, like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Using minerals and coconut oil, the actors mix up their own vivid makeup. Then, by the light of a single bare incandescent bulb and using hand held mirrors, they apply the colors with thin bamboo sticks. Creating these elaborate and intricate designs can take up to 3 hours. A full show, performed in a Temple, usually begins after sunset and goes well into the wee hours. |
