Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger went from being bad actors to popular politicians, but their success is nothing compared to Marudur Gopalamenon Ramachandran (MGR).

He was the superstar hero of many Tamil Nadu films before entering politics. His 11 year rule of the state started in 1977 and was rife with corruption and brutality. Yet his funeral in 1988 attracted millions. That's him as a young actor in the top right corner. His mistress, Jayalitha, the chubby woman on the left, took over party leadership when he died, and despite being convicted of fraud and corruption on a grand scale, remains a major player in Tamil Nadu politics.

Those happy faces at the bottom of the billboard are running for office under her aegis.
