On New Year's Day we awoke before dawn and took a rickshaw to the Taj Mahal to see it as the sun came up. Fellow travelers told us it was quite a thrill. It was also quite a chill. Another cold snap had engulfed northern India.

We stood very quietly with just a couple of dozen other people and watched as the building slowly came into sight - as if out of the mists of time.
