On to Jodphur, not only famous for those baggy-tight pants used by polo players throughout the world, but also for the Meherangarh, or 'majestic fort' which looks as though it's been hewn out of solid sandstone. The British, while they were in power, let the maharajas run things in this part of India, but come Independence, the newly formed government had to wheedle and bribe them to join the greater India. They all were awarded privy purses to keep them happy. But in 1971 Indira Gandhi put an abrupt end to that practice and the maharajas had to fend for themselves.
