We had a flight back to Italy via Norwegian airlines. On the morning we were supposed to leave I checked online and found our flight had been cancelled - as had many flights from New York to all European cities. But we did manage to book a flight on Alitalia for that same day.

We took an Uber (taxis and Ubers were still running) to JFK. Lighted signs above the highway alternately flashed:

• STAY HOME
• SAVE LIVES
• FLATTEN THE CURVE

All, of course, referring to ways to limit the spread of the Coronavirus. But our home is in Italy - and we were on our way there.
