Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is a sprawling city of over 2 million people. It's tucked into a valley in the central Andes at an altitude of 2800+ meters. There are mountains on all sides, some of them volcanic. It seems as though the city stretches on forever. This photo gives only a partial view of the urban landscape - but it'll give you an idea. If we had climbed to the top of the Pichincha volcano overlooking the city you'd get a better idea, but at 4800 meters we opted out of the climb. |
