Central Ecuador is volcano country. There are a couple of dozen of them along what's known as "Avenida de los Volcanes", a stretch of mountains that runs south from Quito to Riobamba. This is Chimborazo. It's considered an active volcano even though it hasn't erupted since about 550 AD.

At 6310 meters it's the tallest in Ecuador. And because of the Earth's equatorial bulge the summit of Chimborazo is the farthest point on the Earth's surface from the Earth's center. So, in a way, it's taller than Everest at 8848 meters!
