Sugar is and has always been the most important crop in Cuba. This hacienda dates back to the mid-1800s.

The brick building in the background is where the owners of the sugar plantation lived. The tower in front was built to keep an eye on the slaves who worked the surrounding fields.

Slavery began in Cuba in the 16th century and wasn't abolished until 1886. Over a million Africans were brought to the island during that time.
