This is the interior of another Penedo church: Igreja de nossa Senhora da Corrente (Our Lady of Chains). It goes back to the 1700s.

Note the dark rectangle on the wall to the left: it's a hiding place. The Lemos family, benefactors of the church, were abolitionists. When slaves fled to the church they would be hidden and protected there until a safer place was found for them.
