When indigenous Americans first saw Spaniards on their horses, they thought it was all one animal. Watching this polo match, and seeing the skill of these riders and horses together, I thought the same. Since 1949 the Argentines have uninterruptedly been world champions. The playing field is enormous, about 300 yards long and 160 yards wide. It could fit nine American football fields. There are 4 players to a team. Each game is divided into 8 chukkas, or innings, lasting 7 minutes each. A few families, like the Heguys, dominate the sport here - they are to polo what the Kahns are to squash. Last Sunday afternoon we watched this tight match between Black Watch and Aguada. Final score 13-12. |
