This is a colectivo. It's LINEA 17, one of over 300 lines that run independently throughout Buenos Aires. It's easily recognizable by color and design as well as by number. They run frequently and during non-rush hours you can often get a seat. They're noisy, they pollute, and you soon learn to hold on tight once you're on board -- but they speedily get you where you want to go. The fare is a bargain at 90 centavos or about 25¢(US), but it's soon to go up again. There are no tokens or tickets, fares must be paid with coins, but there's a dearth of them in circulation. (Rumor has it they cost more to produce than they're worth.) This leads to hoarding, which only exacerbates the problem. I keep a stash, just for our bus rides. |
