The land around Mendoza is high and dry - not what you'd think of as wine country. But a very consistent wine can be produced in vineyards irrigated with water from the Andes, and the Malbec grape does well in high altitudes. Argentina produces over a billion liters of wine each year - about 20% of that is exported. The rest, Joanna and I drink with dinner. I don't know what they'll do with it when we leave. |
