The reducciones were centered on a large square. A cathedral, priest's quarters, and a cemetery were on one side; dormitories and workshops lined the other sides.

Work and lands were divided into two parts: abá mbaé (things belonging to man) and tupá mbaé (things belonging to God). The former was for Guaraní families, the latter for church expenses and for taking care of those who could not fend for themselves.
