Fado is the quintessential music of Portugal. It's performed at night in pubs, cafés, and restaurants. It is one singer, male or female, singing an impassioned, melancholic song accompanied by string instruments. Fado (English: fate) began in the port districts of Lisbon in the 1820s and has only gained in popularity, not only in Portugal, but throughout the world.
