The Castle of San Felipe is a National Historic Monument located on the banks of the Dulce River. It was built by the Spanish in the mid-seventeenth century to protect themselves from the continuous attacks of the English pirates that lurked in the Caribbean.

These pirate attacks mirrored the wars that were going on in Europe. Defenses had to be built - even in the new world. And this is one of them.
