Some believe the marimba originated in Southeast Asia in the 14th Century, while others believe it came from Africa. The earliest records reveal that the marimba has been played by the Maya in Mesoamerica since 1680. It was used for ceremonial dancing, religious and social celebration. And it became, in 1978, the national instrument of Guatemala.
