Rome took control of Egypt around 30 BC. They had a relatively easy time of it because they embraced the ancient gods. This temple in particular is dedicated to Hathor, who was the goddess of women, fertility and love. Centuries later, when Christians arrived on the scene, they wasted no time in defacing images of all the old gods.
